    Il verbo italiano “rompere” o “rompersi” può essere tradotto con to break o to break down, a seconda del contesto. To break viene utilizzato quando si parla di oggetti semplici, mentre to break down viene usato quando ci si riferisce a una macchina complessa, composta da diverse parti, come ad esempio un autoveicolo o un macchinario di una fabbrica: My car has broken down, la mia macchina si è rotta (non My car has broken). Quando invece si rompe una parte della macchina, è corretto usare to break: The rear-view mirror is broken, lo specchio retrovisore è rotto. Per quanto riguarda gli elettrodomestici o gli apparecchi digitali, è corretto usare to break: The fridge is broken, il frigo è rotto, anche se spesso si utilizza l'espressione “not to work”: My mobile doesn't work, il mio cellulare è rotto (non funziona). L'uso di to break, infatti, può implicare un guasto non riparabile.
